Corbin Bleu on meeting Michael Jackson
Corbin Bleu Reivers is an American actor who rose to fame for his role in the “High School Musical” film series. He talked about his meeting with Michael Jackson on the Jimmy Kimmel Live television show.
Jimmy Kimmel: Who was your childhood idol?
Corbin Bleu: Michael Jackson! My mom was a die-hard fan in the 1980s. And I grew up with Michael’s music in my mom’s womb. He almost always had headphones on. Honestly, I had a chance to meet him once!
Jimmy Kimmel: Where did you meet him?
Corbin Bleu: Kenny Ortega, the director of High School Musical, has worked with Michael on his tours many times. He’s worked on music clips. Honestly, he came to a High School Musical concert in Los Angeles.
Jimmy Kimmel: Michael Jackson???
Corbin Bleu: Michael Jackson came to the High School Musical concert with his children. His children are huge fans of this movie. And... he came backstage. And you know... of course, first all those giant bodyguards came in and checked around to make sure there wasn’t a camera there. And then Michael came in! He had a big pair of sunglasses on. And I have to say, he’s really cool. He’s the kind of person who... first of all, he’s really cool. He’s really stylish and cool... Most people—if you see him—you know that many people think he’s kind of unstable. This stylish guy came in and... he’s a big deal... he has a very strong, firm handshake.
Jimmy Kimmel: Are you serious?
Corbin Bleu: Yes. He’s really... I want to say, he’s really cool.
But the interesting part happened after that. We had to perform on stage, knowing that he was sitting there and watching our show. We could see him. My role in this show was a tribute to Michael and praising him. And I kept thinking to myself that Michael Jackson is sitting here and watching me! It was truly one of the most surreal moments of my life. I grew up being influenced by him and loving him. I love his work.
