The Jackson Brothers Receive the BMI Award

Last Thursday, September 4, at the eighth annual BMI Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, the Jackson brothers received a lifetime achievement award as music icons. Their sister, Janet, presented the award on stage to Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and Randy Jackson. Germain and Michael were not present at the ceremony.

When an Associated Press reporter asked Marlon about Michael’s Moonwalker, he jokingly replied: “I don’t know. I think he’s riding camels in Egypt or something like that.”

The Jacksons didn’t have a performance at the event, but the younger ones sang the brothers’ songs. The show began with Dancing Machine performed by the Jabbawockeez. One (the group) sang “I Want You Back,” and JoJo and Lloyd delivered a joint performance of “I’ll Be There.” Mario performed “Heartbreak Hotel,” and Ciara (or rather, “Keri Hilson” in the original text) sang “Who’s Loving You.” The final song was “Never Can Say Goodbye,” performed by Lloyd, Mario, Ray J, and Bobby Valentino.

Before calling her brothers on stage, Janet Jackson said that her family is the most valuable thing in the world to her, and she is proud to pay tribute to her brothers for their achievements in the music industry.

After the ceremony ended, the brothers—Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and Randy—along with their mother and father—Catherine and Joseph—and their sisters—Rebbie, Latoya, and Janet—became the subject of photos taken by photographers.

Tito said about his award: “It’s truly a great honor to know that your music has influenced a generation of artists. We feel proud and honored in this moment.”
