Joe Jackson visits Gary
On Tuesday of this week, Joe Jackson, Michael’s father, received the key to the city of Gary, the hometown of “The Jackson 5,” from the mayor, Rudy Clay, during a visit to the city. He was also informed about the mayor’s plans to establish a museum and a cultural center for the Jacksons.
He also saw the Jackson family name on a sign for another street in the city. In honor of the Jackson family, a street in front of an old house where Michael and his sisters and brothers spent their childhood is now called “Jackson Family.”
The Gary City Hall mansion was decorated with flowers and banners reading “Welcome Home” hanging from its walls.
The mayor said: “This key is not only the key to the city of Gary, but also the key that will open the door to the future Jackson family museum.”
The initial idea for this museum was shaped by the former mayor of Gary, Scott King, during Michael’s visit to the city in 2003. In that year, during an extensive visit to Gary, Michael also received the city key.
Joe Jackson, whose last appearance in Gary had been nearly 20 years earlier, told reporters:
“As the Jackson family, we are proud of the city of Gary. Since the last time I was here, a lot has changed. Big days are ahead for Gary.”
In the main hall of the city hall building, he was very happy to see a large photo collage and Barack Obama, the Democratic Party nominee for the U.S. presidential election, and he called Obama the future president of the United States.
“I and all the members of my family support him. He will be our future president.”
