Michael, an Unexpected Host at the BET Awards

Michael Jackson had an unexpected appearance in Los Angeles yesterday at the third annual awards ceremony of the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards. At a small celebration that was broadcast live on BET, the King of Pop presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to James Brown—but all of that happened after Michael’s dancing with the godfather of Soul music and helping him put on his famous cape.

When Michael walked onto the stage, the crowd—still excited by James Brown’s performance—stood up and gave him a magnificent standing ovation. Michael told the audience, "I couldn’t refuse the chance to present this award to him, because no one has influenced me more than this man who’s right here." With his voice trembling, Michael said he was very happy, then hugged James and presented him with the award.

Michael’s sister LaToya, who was present at the event, told BET in an interview: "I saw James Brown backstage before that, and we talked a little. I was just thinking to myself, 'You’re going to be really shocked when you find out who’s going to give you the award.' And then I went to Michael’s dressing room and said, 'Michael, he has no idea at all!' It was really a beautiful scene.
Based on the figures provided, this year about five and a half million people watched the program on television, which is a 25 percent increase compared to last year’s BET ceremony.
