What More Can I Give Is Being Broadcast in the U.S.
The charitable song What More Can I Give by Michael Jackson, which has not been released until now, was played on the WKTU-FM radio station in New York. First aired last Friday at 6:00 a.m., the song—produced in response to the September 11 incident—was broadcast despite the fact that they were not given permission to do so. Since then, it has been played about six times a day.
What More Can I Give has not only showcased Michael’s art and talent, but also features the artistry of other artists, including Destiny's Child and N Sync, and many others. According to Marc Schaffel, the song’s executive producer, versions of this song were sent to the artists who played a role in making it, and since then it has spread on the internet. In his statement, he said, "We're not going to stop [radio play], but I'm very upset to see this song coming out this way, and not doing the main thing it was meant to do—raising money for the victims of the September 11 incident and for charities for children."
According to WKTU-FM radio, after the song was played, the station received a large number of phone calls and about two hundred emails from its listeners asking for more information about the song and thanking them for playing it. The show director, Frankie Blue, said, "This song is a gift to the world. Michael and all the members of his team devoted their time to it, and it has to be heard. The name of the song is ‘What More Can I Give,’ and I can give a song to the world for them to listen to—and I hope it makes them think about what they can give."
In response to the question of why this song has not been released until now, Schaffel believes the company did not want this to overshadow Michael Jackson’s album, Invincible. He said, "Maybe this (radio play) is a reminder for someone to release it, because it’s the right time. Otherwise, the more this song is copied, the further it moves away from the main goal and it can’t raise money."
Although the song was created for the September 11, 2001 incident, Frankie Blue believes it is still relevant. Blue said, "After the first 9/11 (September incident), we were angry. After the second 9/11, we’re gathering again. Now people need a song like this."
