Turkish Poet Defends Michael Jackson

Aziz Doğdu: There is only one source of inspiration for me — the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. His way of thinking, his outlook on life, his innocence and the quality of his art inspire me and serve as a positive role model. I try to be like him. I wish I had devoted and faithful fans like his.

Kanat: Michael may be the King of Pop, but he's no longer relevant. His era is over.

Aziz Doğdu: You may think his era is over, but in my view he is still very much relevant — he is the most talented artist of all time and his era will never end. Even his latest album, which sold poorly due to Sony's lack of promotion, is an outstanding record. Inspired by it, I have written more poetry and music than ever before. This album affected me deeply. "Speechless" in particular is probably the best and most emotionally charged song Michael has ever written — a shame it was never released as a single. I wrote a song called "Mirrors" dedicated entirely to him. I hope he will sing it one day, but that is just a wish. It will hold a special place in my poetry collection, which I plan to publish next year.

Kanat: Michael is having difficulties with his work. Do you believe he will release an album that will shake the world?

Aziz Doğdu: Yes, I do. As I said, he is an extraordinarily talented artist. Even when he releases an album that does shake the world, the media will never be satisfied. They want to portray him as abnormal and alien. If I were a famous artist like Michael, I would never put any stock in what the media say about me. His fans know what kind of person he truly is. The media never show his humanitarian side. That is why I pay little attention to most articles and interviews — I only read those that seem more credible. I do not know what situation he is in right now, but in any case I fully support him.

Aziz Doğdu is the first Turkish poet to be invited to join the American Poets Society and to be inducted into the International Library of Poetry. His work has been praised by critics, and in a short time he has become one of Turkey's most successful poets.
