Jury Selection Session 1
Exactly 5 minutes before 9:00 a.m. California time (20:30 Tehran time), Michael Jackson arrived at the Santa Maria courthouse.
Michael Jackson, wearing a white outfit and smiling, entered the courthouse accompanied by his lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, and his bodyguard, who held an umbrella over his head. Before entering the courthouse, Michael met a large number of his fans, waved at them, and raised his hand to show the victory sign. As fans shouted and encouraged him, they rushed toward the security fence.
Starting today, the selection of the jury members who will decide on Michael’s charges began.
Inside the courtroom, Michael Jackson sat behind his own table together with his defense team. Today, the first group of people who had been summoned to form the jury were questioned in the presence of Michael Jackson and his lawyers so that their qualifications could be assessed. These people will be present in two groups of 150 in the courtroom.
Michael Jackson’s trial has captured the attention of news media around the world. More than 1,000 journalists from Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and the United States have registered to cover the Michael Jackson trial. Today, they stood in line for 5 hours to obtain entry permits to the courthouse grounds. Out of these 1,000 journalists, only a small number are allowed to enter the courtroom itself, because most of the seats are occupied by the 150 people invited to be questioned.
It should be noted that prosecutor Tom Sneddon was not present in court today.
After the first jury selection session ended, Michael Jackson left the Santa Maria courthouse grounds for Neverland, smiling and waving his hand.
