Statement by Thomas Mesereau regarding Michael

I am very upset about the news and incorrect, full of flaws and self-serving reports regarding Michael Jackson’s relationships—my colleague Ms. Susan Yu and I.

Michael and his beautiful children traveled to the Middle East. Michael asked Susan Yu and me to help him during this difficult period with changes and developments. Michael and his children were tired of unfair and terrifying legal pursuit, and they needed to start a new chapter in their lives.

Since Michael was our client and is now our friend, Susan Yu’s attorney and I agreed to help him and his family during this transition period.

We supported Michael for nearly seven months for this purpose.

We never intended to take on these commitments permanently. For example, my favorite work is defending people accused in criminal cases. During the months of April and June, I will be involved in court in Alabama—two major murder cases, in which I have taken on the defense of the accused for free. I also collaborate in establishing a legal counseling center for poor people at the high-ranking Black church in Los Angeles. Susan Yu’s attorney also has other clients who must be handled in their cases.

We are still in contact with Michael and his secretary, and we have remained good friends. Mr. Jackson fully understands the situation, and he thanks us for the help we provided him during these stages. The uproar created around this situation is nothing but short-sighted tabloid news-making.

It’s better for people to leave Mr. Jackson and his family alone.
