Michael and Madonna are like kids!

Interview with Avi Moyal, former Michael Jackson bodyguard

Being a bodyguard for a celebrity is not an easy job—especially if that person is Michael Jackson or Madonna. And this experience is still vivid in the memories of Avi Moyal, the commander.

After five years of service in the army and then serving for a few years as a war commander, Avi Moyal—an Israeli-born man—took on the job of a protective agent.

“I started working as a bodyguard for Michael Jackson and Madonna. I think they’re more like kids. They decide what they want and when to do it with a sudden burst of movement.”

Moyal talks about his memories with Michael, when they had gone to attend a gathering… “One morning he woke up and decided to go to an amusement park, and we went too…. There were close to 3,000 children there, and all of them were following him. Anyone can control a limited number of people. But dealing with 3,000 children… that was really a problem.”

“And this was at the same time when allegations of sexual abuse against Michael had just been raised (1993)… During this trip, he also had two of his friends with him—two boys, 11 and 8 years old. But I think he was more like a child than a criminal.”

Moyal explains: “One night Michael couldn’t sleep and wanted to go to a mall to go shopping. Of course, at that time all the stores were closed…. So we had to ask the store owners to open their shop doors for Michael while they were still wearing their underwear, because he wanted to shop. Even though he couldn’t read Hebrew, he would point to the things he wanted. And we shopped like that in the middle of the night.”

As for working for Madonna, “She’s a good person,” is the only thing Moyal says.

In the end, Moyal adds: “When you have to protect someone, you can’t be harsh with their fans. You always have to be ready for unexpected things and push them back. Fans can become crazy and dangerous when they’re around celebrities.

In the end, your job is to protect both the celebrity and their fans.”
