The Funeral of Johnnie Cochran

Michael Jackson, along with his senior attorney Thomas Mezrow and hundreds of others, attended the funeral of Johnnie Cochran, which was held in a church in the city of Los Angeles.

Johnnie Cochran is remembered not only for his humanitarian spirit, but also because he was a highly prominent and capable lawyer.

Many stars attended the ceremony, including Stevie Wonder, the blind Black singer, Magic Johnson, and O.J. Simpson.

In 1995, Cochran took on the defense of O.J. Simpson, the Black football hero who was accused of murdering his wife. Cochran saved Simpson and won that case while all the evidence was against his client, proving Simpson’s innocence.

Simpson said about the lawyer who had returned his freedom: “He fought for his clients. He was a really good friend. A good Christian man and a great lawyer.”

Michael said about him: “He was a great man and a great human being.”

Cochran battled a tumor growing in his head from December 2003 until March 29, 2005, and ultimately died at his home in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn and Cochran’s friend said, “He wasn’t just a lover of justice. He achieved justice, fought for it, and made it real.”

Abner Louima, an immigrant from Haiti who had been tortured by the New York police, also attended Cochran’s funeral. “He was my lawyer and my friend.”

In the church hall, from Reverend Jesse Jackson to Michael Jackson and his senior attorney Mezrow, attendees stood and encouraged him with applause in appreciation of Cochran’s justice-seeking activities.
