A recess for free pizza
The unexpected arrival of free pizzas today turned a 10-minute recess for the jury into a much longer affair, effectively putting the judge in the position of having to deal with a fait accompli.
Judge Rodney Melville had scheduled a tough work plan for today, with no time set aside for lunch. There were only three short recesses during six hours of nonstop work and hearing witness testimony. But he had a surprise in store for the jury, who were returning to the courtroom after a brief 15-minute break.
"The manager of the Olive Garden heard on CNN that the jury was starving to death. So he sent over some pizzas."
Judge Melville announced that the jury had requested extra time to eat the pizzas, and then added:
"So once they’re full, they can thank CNN."
